Understanding Rhinoplasty: What is it and Why is it Done?
Rhinoplasty (nose job) in Turkey is an effective aesthetic operation for solving nose deformities. With his experience, Dr. Seckin Ulusoy has been performing operations that give very successful results in this regard. Only rhinoplasty operations are performed by our doctor, and most people leave our clinic very satisfied.
Face harmony is the crucial link with the external world and one of the most important limbs that emphasize the beauty of the face is the nose.
A deformity in the nose causes different psychological and social problems, and people prefer nasal aesthetics to eliminate these problems. Although women often prefer aesthetic applications that are carried out in a very practical way due to today’s developing technology, men have aesthetic surgery to feel good.
Who is Rhinoplasty Performed?
Aesthetic nose surgeries can be applied to all adults who are not satisfied with the shape of the nose. Rhinoplasty Surgeries are performed on individuals who have completed the development of bone and cartilage structure normally, unless there are factors such as trauma or disease. Patients must have completed puberty and the nose must be fully formed. Otherwise, it is not possible to achieve the desired results after the operation. Cosmetic Nose Surgery can also be performed for aesthetic purposes only or to improve the breathing functions of the nose.
Aesthetic Rhinoplasty is one of the most preferred surgical operations today. Since the nose is the most prominent organ on the human face, the slightest symmetry disorder in the nose directly affects facial beauty. It has been observed that the deformity of the nose causes psychological problems in some patients. Especially our young girls who have reached the age of marriage can make it a big problem when they have a deformity in their noses that disturbs them. However, in recent years, male patients also apply to aesthetic nose surgery. As a result of the widespread use of social media, the aesthetic understanding of the society has changed and the number of applications to Aesthetic Rhinoplasty Surgeons has increased even for the smallest defects seen in the nose.
At what age can rhinoplasty be performed?
Rhinoplasty surgery has no upper age limit and can be performed at any age as long as the general health condition allows. However, it is not recommended for cosmetic purposes at young ages when cartilage and bone development is not yet complete. The lower age limit for aesthetic nose surgery is determined by many experts as 16 years old for girls and 17 years old and above for boys.
Rhinoplasty (Nose Job) in Istanbul, Turkey Surgery
Rhinoplasty in Turkey is the name given to all procedures performed in line with their expectations and are not satisfied with the shape of the nose. Rhinoplasty surgery performed by Specialist Professor Doctor Seckin Ulusoy practically helps the person to have a process without any pain.
This surgery is among the most frequently performed operations all over the world. As aesthetic applications change the shape of the nose, it is the operations performed for the people to achieve the nose structure they want in line with their expectations.
Rhinoplasty Before Nose Aesthetic Surgery
Before the operation, a preparation phase is absolutely necessary. In this preparation stage, the expectations of the people from the nasal aesthetic applications are learned and it is planned what kind of nose structure they want to achieve with the help of Photoshop and some simulations. This stage is very important for understanding rhinoplasty candidate expectations and achievable results.
Before the rhinoplasty procedures, which are surgical procedures, the patient is given all the necessary tests for the operation and if the patient’s disease history is available, it is listened to by the specialist. The patient needs to stop blood thinners like salicylic acid, general vitamins, and other supplements in preparation for the operation and has to share all the details with the physician.
After Rhinoplasty Surgery
Revision Rhinoplasty is generally a more complex surgery because the surgeon now has to deal with adhesions and inappropriately healed tissues.
It also makes it difficult to separate the skin and soft tissue from the cartilage in adhesions caused of previously surgery. In addition, we often need to reconstruct the nose as well, for this aim, very frequently, we need to extract cartilage from other sources (Rib cartilage).
We are planning a revision surgery at least 4-6 months after the first revision, but if this is to be the second revision (ie 3rd nose surgery), we recommend waiting for at least 8-12 months and time for the tissues to settle.
How Is Nose Aesthetic Surgery Performed?
Many different techniques or many surgeries can be performed together in aesthetic procedure to correct the nose shape. For this reason, Seckin Ulusoy, a specialist physician, first listens to the patient’s story with all ears ensuring that the correct method is performed with the right surgery, and ensuring that the patient satisfactions.
The operation, which is mostly performed under general anesthesia, can be performed under local anesthesia in some cases, with the decision of the physician.
The operation may be completed in an average of 3 hours, and depending on the patient’s condition, it may be necessary to stay in the hospital overnight. With the development of technology, rhinoplasty operations take place for a short time and very comfortably which will prevent the patient from feeling pain and swellings.
For this reason, you can make a safe operation decision and have a meeting with Specialist Doctor Seçkin Ulusoy and perform a safe treatment process.
Rhinoplasty Surgery Techniques
Two different techniques are used that are widely preferred and are successful in individuals. These techniques, which are preferred by our distinguished Ulusoy specialist doctor, help to complete rhinoplasty operations.
Types and Processes of Rhinoplasty Surgery
In aesthetic operations performed to correct the shape of the nose, two different methods are used as open and closed surgery. The procedures performed in both surgeries are the same and the only difference is that the open surgery is performed by cutting the skin between the nostrils, while the closed surgery is performed completely through the nose and therefore there is no incision scar (scar tissue) visible from the outside. Aesthetic Nose Surgery consists of the following processes.
1. Preoperative Examination and Preparation
- The surgeon evaluates your nasal structure, examines your health history and discusses your surgical expectations. At this stage, sharing your expectations correctly with your surgeon is extremely valuable for you to achieve the most accurate result. Having realistic expectations increases the level of success.
- Photographs are taken and an operation plan is made. Detailed photographs of the patient’s nasal structure are taken for comparison before and after the operation. After the examination and examinations, it is decided what kind of surgery will be performed and the operation is planned.
2. Anaesthesia Application
- Local or general anaesthesia is performed. General anaesthesia is commonly preferred. Local anaesthesia is preferred for minor surgical interventions. If a major intervention is required and the operation time will be long, then general anaesthesia is more appropriate.
3. Incisions and Surgery
- Closed Rhinoplasty: Incisions are made inside the nose, there is no scar from the outside.
- Open Rhinoplasty: An incision is made between the nostrils, preferred in more complex cases.
- Bone and cartilage tissue is moulded. If necessary, cartilage is added or excess bone/cartilage is removed.
4. Nose Shaping
- In the main stage of the surgery, the shape of the nose is reconstructed according to the person’s wishes. Bone and cartilage are carefully shaped. Nose shaping is done in accordance with the anatomical structure of the patient. In some cases, additional cartilage tissue may be required. Cartilage is usually taken from rib cartilage and is a widely used graft material.
5. Completion of the operation and sutures
- Incisions are closed and sutures are placed inside and outside the nose. Plaster or splint is placed on the nose for support. The patient is kept under control for at least one day after the operation.
- Swelling and bruising occur for a few weeks after the operation. During the healing process, the tampons in the nose and the external splint are removed under the doctor’s control.
- Full recovery takes several months and the results gradually become visible. The doctor monitors the healing process with regular check-ups.
Common Rhinoplasty Goals: Addressing Functional and Cosmetic Concerns
If there is a deformity in the person’s nose, the suitability for the operation is checked. In this process, it is also important that the patient’s bone development is completed and of age.
It is an operation that is applied safely to everyone, regardless of male or female and is among the most widely preferred cosmetic surgery today.
Although the success of the operation and whether the patient is suitable or not is related, it is not appropriate in some cases. It is not correct to operate on these patients, people with psychological disorders and bleeding disorders.
What are the advantages of cosmetic nose surgery in Turkey?
•Choice for plastic surgery choice clinics in Turkey is a high-quality cosmetic procedure that is highly preferred by many medical tourists all over the world. This is mainly because plastic surgeons in Turkey offer more favorable surgical prices and, therefore, have more surgical experience, as well as a high level of health professional training and hospital equipment in the country.
• If you have spent years unhappy with the shape of your nose, having surgery can increase your self-confidence. In many scientific survey studies, an average of 96% of these patients say that they feel much more comfortable and self-confident after surgery. In our clinic (Dr. Seckin Rhinoplasty Clinic), we observe that we have high patient satisfaction rates compatible with the whole world.
· Advantages of rhinoplasty:
– Aesthetic Rhinoplasty gives your face a more attractive and balanced appearance.
– If you are uncomfortable with the shape of your nose, having aesthetic nose surgery can increase your self-confidence. Studies have shown that 96% of patients who have aesthetic nose surgery feel much more comfortable and self-confident after surgery.
– Since it is a local operation, it minimally affects your work performance. You can usually be discharged the day after the operation and return to your daily activities.
– You may feel very little pain during the operation and it is normal to have a small amount of oedema and bruising. Edema and bruises will start to disappear within three or four days after the operation. You will be able to breathe quite comfortably after the silicone tampons are removed.
– You can usually be discharged the next day after the operation. You can travel by plane (for this purpose, you must have your flight permit document issued by your doctor with you) or car within the knowledge of the physician.
Disadvantages of Rhinoplasty Surgery:
- It is relatively expensive and insurance companies usually do not cover it. Rarely, however, some insurance companies may cover the payment if there are medical reasons, such as breathing problems.
- Since there will be visible swelling and bruising for the first week, you may not be able to work actively for 5-10 days.
- Nausea, vomiting and sore throat are rare effects of general anaesthesia.
- It is a process that requires patience and it takes time for the planned results to appear. It takes a long time (4-6 months) to see the final shape of your nose and sometimes it may not match your imagined expectations.
- If your nose does not heal properly, revision rhinoplasty may be required.
Types of Rhinoplasty Procedures: Open vs. Closed Rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty can be done by open or closed methods. Closed nose aesthetic surgeries are performed by making an incision through the nostrils. The biggest advantage of closed surgery is the invisible incision ( Invisible scarring) and better protection of the natural soft tissues inside the nose. In open operations, a small incision is made through the skin in the middle of both nostrils. It is preferred in people who have a wide view of the doctor and have advanced deformities.
Expert Dr. Seckin Ulusoy frequently prefers open surgery in ethnic nose jobs and revision rhinoplasty surgeries. In primary cosmetic surgeries in Turkey, our in our plastic surgery clinic, generally applies the closed preservation method with an endoscope and ultrasonic devices in patients who will have the first surgery.
Rhinoplasty Surgery Methods – with details:
Rhinoplasty is performed with two different methods as open or closed surgery. In open operations, a small incision is made through the skin in the centre of both nostrils and the whole nose is opened. It is preferred for people who have a wide angle of vision of the doctor and have advanced deformities.
In closed rhinoplasty surgeries, the incision is made through the nostrils and invisible to the eye. The biggest advantage of closed surgery is that it can offer more natural results due to the lack of incision on the nasal skin and better protection of the soft tissues in the nose.
The preference for open or closed rhinoplasty surgery varies according to the surgeon, and it is possible to achieve very successful results with both methods. In our own practice, we often prefer open surgery in ethnic and revision rhinoplasty surgeries, while we usually use the closed rhinoplasty method in patients who will undergo their first surgery.
In rhinoplasty operations, endoscope and ultrasonic piezo devices methods are frequently used by many surgeons, especially in the last decade. We provide detailed descriptions of these methods for your information below.
· Open Rhinoplasty Surgery
o What are the Advantages of Open Rhinoplasty Surgery:
Open rhinoplasty is a preferred method especially for patients with severe deformities in the nasal structure. It allows the surgeon to see the nasal structure more clearly during surgery, which is a great advantage when major changes in the nasal arch or septum are required. In open rhinoplasty, a small incision is made between the nostrils, which gives the surgeon the opportunity to examine the operation area widely and make more precise corrections. This method can be especially ideal for those who want to achieve an aesthetically natural result.
o What are the Disadvantages of Open Rhinoplasty Surgery:
Although open rhinoplasty offers a wide field of vision, it also has disadvantages. Due to the small incision made in this method, there is a possibility of a very thin scar on the nose, but usually this scar disappears almost completely over time. Also, the recovery time may be slightly longer compared to closed rhinoplasty. Postoperative swelling and bruising may be more pronounced, which means that the patient’s full recovery may take several months. The long duration of the operation can also be counted among the disadvantages.
o Things to Consider Before Open Rhinoplasty Surgery:
The preoperative process begins with a detailed evaluation. The surgeon analyses the nasal structure and listens to the patient’s expectations. Photographs are taken and an operation plan is drawn up. In addition, the general health status is checked, blood tests are performed and anaesthesia preparations are completed. Before the surgery, it is important that the patient does not smoke, avoids blood thinners and follows the doctor’s other instructions. During this period, open communication between the surgeon and the patient is critical to ensure satisfaction after the operation.
o What should be considered after open rhinoplasty surgery?
In the postoperative period, there are some important points that the patient should pay attention to speed up the healing process. The splint placed on the nose is usually removed after a week, but swelling and bruising may persist for several weeks. Patients are advised to keep their heads elevated and protect their noses against impacts during the first few days. The complete healing process may take several months and the final results are usually clear within 6 months to 1 year. In addition, using antibiotics and painkillers prescribed by the doctor reduces the risk of infection and promotes healing.
· Closed Rhinoplasty Surgery
o What are the Advantages of Closed Rhinoplasty Surgery:
Closed rhinoplasty is a method performed with incisions made inside the nose, so that there is no visible incision scar on the outside. This method is usually preferred when smaller corrections need to be made and the postoperative recovery time is usually faster. Since closed rhinoplasty is less invasive, postoperative swelling and bruising are milder. At the same time, patients can return to their daily activities more quickly. Aesthetically, the absence of scars is one of the most important advantages of closed rhinoplasty.
o What are the Disadvantages of Closed Rhinoplasty Surgery:
The disadvantages of closed rhinoplasty include the surgeon having a more limited view of the surgical field. Therefore, it may be more difficult than open rhinoplasty in nasal structures that require complex or extensive corrections. The surgeon’s inability to gain direct access to the nasal structure may limit the use of this method when very precise corrections are required. In addition, it may be more difficult to achieve the desired results in certain areas such as the tip of the nose, which indicates that the method has some limitations.
o Things to Consider Before Closed Rhinoplasty Surgery:
Before the closed rhinoplasty surgery, the patient’s expectations are analysed in detail and it is evaluated whether the nasal structure is suitable for surgical intervention. The patient is informed about the operation process, possible risks and recovery period. Before the surgery, preparations recommended by the doctor should be made, including blood tests and general health check. It is also recommended to avoid the use of blood thinners such as aspirin and not to smoke in the preoperative period.
o What should be considered after closed rhinoplasty surgery:
The healing process after closed rhinoplasty is usually faster and more comfortable. Tampons are used in the nose after the surgery, but the tampons are usually removed within a week. Swelling and bruising may be less pronounced in closed rhinoplasty, and patients can return to their normal lives more quickly after resting for a few days after surgery. Nevertheless, the complete healing process may take several months and the final shape of the nasal structure becomes evident at the end of this process. Following the doctor’s instructions is important for the successful outcome of the surgery.
- Electro Piezo Rhinoplasty Surgery
Piezo rhinoplasty is an advanced rhinoplasty method that shapes the nasal bones using ultrasonic vibrations. In this technique, the Electro Piezo device only affects the bone tissue and does not damage the soft tissues and vessels. While the cutting instruments used in traditional rhinoplasty methods can sometimes damage the delicate tissues around the nose, the Piezo technique largely eliminates this risk. This results in less bruising and swelling after surgery. In addition, the healing process is accelerated and patients can return to their daily lives more quickly. Piezo rhinoplasty can be an excellent option for patients who want to achieve a natural appearance.
Thanks to piezo technology, surgeons can shape the nasal bones in a more controlled and precise manner. This prevents unwanted fractures or deformities during surgery. It allows for more symmetrical and aesthetic results, especially in the nasal structure. In addition, the operation time can be shortened with this method, because the surgeon’s nose reshaping process is performed more quickly and effectively. Piezo device, which can be used in both open and closed rhinoplasty techniques, offers the latest technology in rhinoplasty operations and increases patient satisfaction at a very high level.
To summarise, Electro Piezo rhinoplasty surgery offers an innovative and modern solution for patients seeking precise intervention, fast recovery and natural results.
- What is Type Plasty?
Tip Plasty is a rhinoplasty surgery performed to reshape the tip of the nose and achieve a more aesthetically balanced appearance. This procedure aims to correct problems with the shape, width, projection or symmetry of the nasal tip. The dorsum of the nose or bone structure is not intervened, so the operation may be simpler and the recovery time shorter. Tip Plasty is generally suitable for patients with aesthetic problems such as the tip of the nose being too wide, low or high.
During Tip Plasty surgery, the surgeon carefully corrects the cartilage tissue that shapes the tip of the nose. During the operation, the size of the nostrils can be reduced, the tip of the nose can be made more symmetrical and the projection (degree of distance from the face) of the nasal tip can be adjusted. During this procedure, a closed technique is usually used, i.e. the incisions are made inside the nose and there is no external scarring. The aim is for patients to obtain a more aesthetic and natural nasal tip as a result.
The healing process after Tip Plasty is generally faster than rhinoplasty. Since the back of the nose and bone structure are not intervened, swelling and bruising are less. After the surgery, patients usually rest for a few days and can return to their normal life within a week. It may take several months for the full results to become visible, but patients usually notice significant improvements in the tip of the nose in a short time. Tip Plasty offers an effective and minimally invasive solution for patients who only want to shape the tip without touching the overall structure of the nose.
- Laser Rhinoplasty – New Generation Rhinoplasty Method
Laser rhinoplasty is an innovative application in which laser technology is used instead of traditional surgical methods to make aesthetic and functional improvements to the nasal structure. Thanks to the precision of the laser, procedures performed especially on the nasal skin and soft tissues can be completed faster, more comfortably and with a low risk of complications. This method is preferred by both patients and surgeons due to its short recovery time and less invasive intervention.
· How is Laser Rhinoplasty Performed?
Laser rhinoplasty, although not as comprehensive as traditional rhinoplasty, can be effective in shaping the tip of the nose, reducing the nostrils and eliminating some skin problems. During the operation, the nasal tissues are precisely shaped using a carbon dioxide (CO2) or erbium laser. This technology minimises the risk of bleeding, especially when working in the superficial layers of the skin, and can reduce the need for surgical sutures.
· Laser Usage Areas:
- Nose tip lifting and shaping
- Reduction of the nostrils
- Treatment of small vascular problems and skin blemishes in the nose
- Removal of fine wrinkles on the nose
· Advantages of Laser Rhinoplasty
- Fast Recovery Time: Since laser technology provides less damage to the tissues, the healing process of the patients is accelerated. Most patients can return to their daily activities a few days after the procedure.
- Less Bleeding: The laser minimises the risk of bleeding by sealing the blood vessels.
- Minimal Scar Risk: The risk of scarring is higher after traditional rhinoplasty. In laser interventions, scar formation is at minimum level.
- Fast and Precise Intervention: Laser devices allow surgeons to work more precisely and offer effective results, especially in small corrections.
- Reduced Need for Anaesthesia: Local anaesthesia may be sufficient for minor procedures. This eliminates the risks associated with general anaesthesia.
· Limits and Disadvantages of Laser Rhinoplasty
- Extensive changes cannot be made: The laser cannot change the nasal bone or cartilage tissue. Therefore, traditional rhinoplasty methods are needed for major structural changes.
- Not Suitable for Everyone: Laser rhinoplasty may be insufficient for patients with severe deformation or deviation problems in the nasal structure.
- Revision may be required: Although laser is effective in minor corrections, in some cases, the desired aesthetic results may not be achieved and additional interventions may be required.
· Who is Laser Rhinoplasty Suitable for?
Laser rhinoplasty may be particularly suitable for the following groups:
- Those with minor aesthetic problems on the tip of the nose or skin
- Those who have had rhinoplasty before and need minor revisions
- Those who do not want to take general anaesthesia or who are looking for a fast recovery process
- Those who want to reduce the size of the nostrils
· Recovery Process and Things to Consider
Patients usually recover within a few days after laser rhinoplasty. However, care should be taken not to hit the nose area in the first days. Slight redness or tenderness may be seen on the skin, but these effects disappear in a short time. The healing process can be supported by using creams or medications recommended by the doctor.
· Conclusion
Laser rhinoplasty is an innovative and effective option for minor aesthetic corrections. The fast recovery time and minimal invasiveness make this method attractive. However, it should be noted that the laser may be insufficient in cases requiring extensive structural changes. Patients should consult with a specialised surgeon to find out if they are suitable candidates for laser aesthetics. With proper planning and application, laser rhinoplasty can offer natural and satisfying results.
- Profiloplasty The Art of Balancing Face Profile
Profiloplasty is a combination procedure in which aesthetic interventions are performed in areas such as the nose, chin, forehead and cheeks to make facial contours look more harmonious and balanced. The aim is to improve the profile appearance of the face, to increase the harmony between the nose and chin and to provide self-confidence. Profiloplasty combines procedures such as rhinoplasty (rhinoplasty), chin aesthetics (genioplasty) and sometimes forehead contouring. This multifaceted approach helps to achieve a more natural and balanced appearance by addressing the face as a whole.
How is Profiloplasty Performed?
Profiloplasty is planned individually and usually requires a combination of several aesthetic operations. The following elements are taken into account in the procedure:
- Rhinoplasty (Nose Aesthetics):
- Shaping the nasal structure in accordance with the facial profile.
- Problems such as the arch on the back of the nose or low nose tip are corrected.
- Genioplasty (Chin Aesthetics):
- If the chin is small, backward or asymmetrical, correction is made with filling, prosthesis or surgical procedures.
- Ensuring the balance between the chin tip and nose improves the facial profile.
- Forehead Aesthetics
- If the forehead area is too protruding or flattened, fat injection or surgical interventions can be applied.
- The harmony of forehead, nose and chin is a critical element for aesthetic balance.
- Cheek Fillers
- Fillers can be used to eliminate depressions or loss of volume in the cheek area. This procedure makes the face look younger and more balanced.
Advantages of Profiloplasty
- Natural and Balanced Appearance: Profiloplasty improves aesthetic harmony by addressing the entire profile of the face, not just one area.
- Increased Self-Confidence: When a person has a more balanced facial profile, he/she feels more confident in his/her social life.
- Versatile Solution: Unlike individual procedures such as nose or chin, profiloplasty offers a comprehensive approach to aesthetic problems.
- Long Term Results: Surgical interventions are permanent, while filling applications provide long-term aesthetic benefits.
Who is a Suitable Candidate for Profiloplasty?
Profiloplasty is suitable for individuals who have aesthetic concerns about the facial profile and experience the following conditions:
- Those with a marked disproportion between the nose and chin.
- People with a receding or small jaw.
- Those with a nose arch, curvature or low nose tip.
- Those who want to increase the balance in the forehead, cheek and chin area.
- Those who have realistic expectations from surgeries for facial profile.
The healing process of prophyloplasty
The recovery time in profiloplasty varies depending on the procedures performed:
- Nose Aesthetics (Rhinoplasty): Oedema and bruising decrease in the first few weeks, but full recovery may take several months.
- Chin Aesthetics: There may be mild swelling after filling procedures, and prosthesis or surgical interventions require a few weeks of recovery.
- Forehead or Cheek Filling: The healing process in filling procedures is very short and the patient can return to normal life on the same day.
After the surgery, it is important for patients to follow the doctor’s recommendations and protect the facial area against impacts during the healing process.
Expectations and Results After Profiloplasty
With profiloplasty, the facial profile becomes more balanced and harmony is achieved between areas such as nose, chin and forehead. After the procedure, the person gains a younger and more aesthetic appearance. However, as with any aesthetic operation, one should be patient after the surgery and allow time for the healing process to get the final results.
Profiloplasty is a multifaceted aesthetic approach in which the face is considered as a whole and aesthetic balance and harmony are achieved. Interventions performed on the nose, chin, forehead and cheeks aim to achieve an ideal appearance of the person’s facial profile. This procedure increases both the appearance and self-confidence of the person by correcting minor incompatibilities in facial features. Profiloplasty offers permanent and satisfactory results in the aesthetic field when applied with the right planning and an experienced surgeon.
What are the differences between female and male rhinoplasty surgery?
Female and Male Nose Job Differences:
Rhinoplasty, which was an cosmetic procedures preferred by women in the past, but nowadays become a highly preferred plastic surgery procedure by men today. Currently,in our plastic surgery clinic male and female ratio was almost equal to each other.
Desired features in men: Nose-lip angle should be less upturned than in women, a straight masculane nasal ridge. Otherwise, if the nasel bone is too curved and the tip of the nose is too much raised, a feminine (feminine) appearance appears.
In female patients: Slightly raised nose ( More rotation) tip and a slight curve on the nose ridge accepted more feminen. Mostly Turkish plastic surgeons try to achive nose rotation, the angle of the nose with the upper lip, 95 degrees on average for men and 105 degrees for women.
While the lines are more pronounced and sharp in male patients, the passages should be softer in female patients. But plastic surgeries in Turkey is a personal cosmetic procedures. Sometimes, male patients may want only certain parts of their noses to be corrected. They don’t want much change. For example; Just like removing the nasal bridge or lifting the low nasal tip very slightly. Since the skin of male patients is thicker and oily, the planning of the surgery should be done accordingly.
What is Revision Rhinoplasty Surgery?
Revision rhinoplasty surgery is called revision rhinoplasty surgery, which is performed on patients who cannot achieve the desired result from previous rhinoplasty surgery and are not satisfied with the result.
Revision rhinoplasty is usually an operation that requires more surgical experience than the first nose surgery. In revision surgery, the surgeon has to deal with tissues that have not healed properly.
Adhesions from previous surgery make it difficult to separate the skin and soft tissue from the cartilage. Cartilage tissue may often be required to reshape the nose. These cartilages are usually supplied from the patient’s own rib cartilage or fresh frozen cadaver cartilage.
· In which cases is revision rhinoplasty surgery necessary?
Following the popularisation of cosmetic rhinoplasty surgeries all over the world, the frequency of rhinoplasty surgeries performed for the second or more times has also increased. Revision nose surgery may sometimes be due to the previous operation not being successful, not achieving the desired results, and sometimes due to the natural healing process.
Revision rhinoplasty surgeries are divided into two as minor (Touch Up) or major (Blow = Detailed) depending on the scope of the problem.
Every rhinoplasty surgeon may have revision cases. In our clinic, our minor revision rates, also called retouching, are 3% and major revision rates are 1%. Generally, when retouching is required, we can produce solutions with simple touches under local (regional) anaesthesia. However, in rare cases, general anaesthesia and the use of rib cartilage may be required for major revision surgeries.
Normally major revision surgeries are more complex and costly. However, when it comes to our own revisions, it is sufficient for the patient to cover only the hospital fee and we do not charge a surgical fee.
· Is it necessary to use cartilage in revision rhinoplasty?
In revision surgeries, cartilage and soft tissue are often needed. The reason for this is that the cartilage structures in the nose are usually removed in previous operations. Therefore, rib or in some cases ear cartilage can be used. In our clinic, rib cartilage is usually used. In addition, depending on the patient’s condition and consent, the use of cadaver cartilage, which we call allograft, is a very safe and comfortable application today.
· When can revision nose surgery be performed after the first surgery?
Many nasal surgeons are of the opinion that revision rhinoplasty surgery can be performed 4-6 months after the first surgery. However, if reoperation is required after the second and more nose surgeries, which we call multiple revision, the waiting period is longer. In our own practice, we plan revision surgery at least 8-12 months after the first revision. However, if the person will have a 2nd revision rhinoplasty (i.e. 3rd nose surgery), it is recommended to wait at least 12 months for the tissues to settle.
The Rhinoplasty Procedure: Step-by-Step Guide
Depending on the developing technology and the experience of our Specialist Professor Dr Seçkin Ulusoy, the treatment process for rhinoplasty operations is easily completed without feeling pain.
Who Is Nose Aesthetic Surgery Applied To?
In aesthetic applications, patient suitability is important for the operation to be successful. In addition to the detailed examination and simulation analysis to determine whether the patient is suitable or not, the specialist physician also decides by listening to the patient’s medical history.
• We will perform your discharge from the hospital the day after the operation (In special requests, we can be discharged 6 hours after the operation, but in our practice, we recommend our patients stay in the hospital for 1 night).
• You will have almost no pain from the operation period, but there will almost always be limited edema and bruising, especially the next day. After 3-4 days, edema and bruises will be relieved and you will be able to breathe easily with the removal of your silicone leaflet.
• You can visit every part of Istanbul from the 2nd day after the operation.
What are the cons of rhinoplasty surgery?
• Relatively expensive. Insurance companies often exclude payments, but some insurers can meet if structural needs are corrected for medical reasons such as breathing problems.
• Since there will be visible swelling and bruising for the first week, you will stay away from the active work environment for 5-10 days depending on your workplace environment.
• Some effects of taking general anesthesia, nausea, vomiting, sore throat, etc. may be rare.
• It may take up to a year to see your final results and may not match your expectations.
• If your nose does not heal properly (or your surgery was not done well for the first time), you may need a revision rhinoplasty. Every rhinoplasty surgeon has a revision case. Depending on the scope of the problem, revision rhinoplasty can be minor or major.
What are the tips that can help the rhinoplasty healing process?
• Sleep on high pillows for 6 weeks after the operation, helping to reduce swelling.
• Try to lie on the back side positions, for this aim, we recommend traveling pillows.
• Follow a low-salt diet that helps reduce swelling at the tip of the nose.
• Apply a cold compress with ice cubes for the first 48 hours.
• Try not to blow your nose at least for 2 weeks as it may burst your stitches and increase your edema.
• Avoid strenuous activities for the first two weeks and sports that might hit your nose for four weeks.
What is Septoplasty, and Why Is It Performed?
The patient is satisfied with the appearance of the nose, but breathing through the nose is quite common. In this case, the inability to breathe due to conditions such as cartilage or bone curvature in the nose can create significant physiological problems. Such conditions can often be accompanied by concha hypertrophy, known as nasal flesh growth. In these cases, cartilage curvature and nasal flesh reduction applications can be performed together to correct the nasal air passage ( Septoplasty + Turbinate Radiofrequency).
· Nasal cartilage and bone curvature correction (Septoplasty)
Most of the patients who apply for rhinoplasty surgery have anatomical disorders that cause deformity in the outer and inner parts of the nose. It is also necessary to intervene in the nasal cartilage called septum in the nose of the majority of rhinoplasty patients. In addition, during these procedures, the turbinates, also called nasal flesh, can be reduced by radiofrequency method. The surgery that facilitates breathing is called functional nose surgery or “Septoplasty”. The process of changing the shape of the nose together with the bone cartilage curvatures in the nose is called “Septorhinoplasty”. The patient is satisfied with the appearance of his nose, but the inability to breathe through the nose is quite common. In this case, inability to breathe due to conditions such as cartilage or bone curvature in the nose can create important physiological problems. Such conditions may be accompanied by turbinate hypertrophy, commonly known as nasal flesh growth. In these cases, cartilage curvature and nasal flesh reduction applications can be performed together to correct the nasal air passage (Septoplasty + Turbinate Radiofrequency).
· What is the healing process of septoplasty?
After septoplasty, there is a very short operation time compared to plastic surgery. The healing process is also fast. In addition, since there is no procedure for bone and cartilage tissues, there is no oedema or bruising. After two days, the silicone is removed from the nose and the person can return to his country by plane if he wishes. Such surgeries are generally called functional nose surgeries or septoplasty. During these procedures, no change is made in the shape of the nose. However, during septoplasty, the tip of the nose can be slightly lifted if the person wishes.
· How much does septoplasty cost?
Nose surgery prices vary greatly depending on the surgeon and hospital, but the average septum surgery is 50% lower than aesthetic nose surgery. Deviated septum surgery under general anaesthesia costs between 1500 and 3500 USD in Turkey.
How is the healing process of septoplasty?
After septoplasty, there is a very short operation time compared to plastic surgery. In addition, the healing process is also speedy. In addition, there is no edema or bruising as there is no procedure for bone and cartilage tissues. After two days, silicone is removed from the nose, and the person can return to his country by plane if he wishes. Such surgeries are generally called functional nose surgeries or septoplasty. During these procedures, no change is made in the shape of the nose. However, during septoplasty, if the person wants, the tip of the nose can be slightly lifted.
What is the price of septoplasty?
Nose surgery prices vary widely depending on the surgeon and hospital, but the average septum surgery is 50% lower than aesthetic nose surgery. Septum deviation surgery performed under general anesthesia costs between 1500 and 3500 USD in Turkey.
Rhinoplasty Risks and Complications: Understanding Potential Issues
Rhinoplastic surgeries are among the most common surgeries performed worldwide. As with all surgeries, they may have some risks and complications. The main risks and complications are anesthesia, bleeding during or after surgery, and infection risk.
Rhinoplasty surgeries are generally accepted as low-risk surgeries. However, the most common negativity that may be encountered after surgery is that the person is not satisfied with the cosmetic results at the expected rate. In these cases, it can only be corrected with another nose surgery, which we call revision surgery. However, revision surgeries also have additional risks compared to the first surgery patients.
The most common surgical reasons patients are unsatisfied after surgery are the formation of asymmetries, unwanted irregularities on the back of the nose, and symmetry disorders in the nostrils. In addition, in rare cases, the formation of an inside hole in the middle cartilage area, which we call septum, and eye-related problems are among the reasons that may be complications of the surgery, albeit rarely.
What can I do to minimize the risks and complications of rhinoplasty surgeries?
The most important way to minimize all these risks and complications of cosmetic nose surgeries is to reach a board-certified, experienced surgeon. Because a skilled surgeon will operate on you with a good team in a hospital he believes in and trusts. In addition, the surgical equipment an excellent and experienced surgeon uses will be hygienic and of high standards. For this purpose, the essential point is to reach a doctor with good experience in aesthetic nose surgeries and many satisfied patients and talk to him about all the surgery details.
What are the Risks of Rhinoplasty Surgeries?
Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that is often preferred for aesthetic and functional improvements. However, as with any surgical operation, rhinoplasty also has some risks. Knowing these risks helps patients to make an informed decision about the surgery. Below, you can examine the possible risks of rhinoplasty surgeries in detail under subheadings and articles.
- Anaesthesia Related Risks
Rhinoplasty can be performed under general or local anaesthesia. While anaesthesia ensures that the surgical process is safe, it may also bring some side effects:
- Nausea and vomiting: This is a common symptom after surgery.
- Allergic reactions: Allergy to anaesthesia drugs may develop, although rarely.
- Breathing problems: Under general anaesthesia, short-term problems with breathing may occur.
- Risk of Bleeding and Infection
As with any surgical procedure, rhinoplasty carries the risk of bleeding and infection.
- Bleeding (haematoma): Blood may accumulate in or around the nose after surgery.
- Infection: Although the surgical field is kept sterile, the risk of infection may sometimes develop. In this case, antibiotic treatment may be required.
- Problems in the recovery process
The healing process is the most critical phase of the postoperative period. Improper healing can negatively affect aesthetic results and functional status.
- Swelling and bruises: Especially in the first weeks, intense swelling can be seen in and around the nose.
- Tissue loss: In cases where adequate blood flow is not provided, damage to skin tissue may develop.
- Prolonged nasal congestion: Difficulty breathing may occur due to swelling of the nasal mucosa after surgery.
- Aesthetic Results are Different from Expected
Although meticulously planned, the results of rhinoplasty surgeries may not always match the patient’s expectations.
- Asymmetry Slight imbalances may occur in the nostrils or nasal line.
- Need for revision: Some patients may require a second operation (revision rhinoplasty) due to dissatisfaction or unexpected aesthetic results.
- Risk of impaired nasal function
Rhinoplasty surgeries can affect not only the appearance but also the functions of the nose.
- Breathing problems: Nasal obstruction may occur if the curvature of the septum is incorrectly corrected or excess tissue is removed.
- Decreased sense of smell: Rarely, temporary or permanent olfactory disturbances may develop after surgery.
- Psychological Effects and Expectation Management
Postoperative aesthetic results may have psychological effects in some patients.
- Postoperative stress: Patients may experience tension and anxiety due to the long recovery period.
- Body perception disorder: Psychological dissatisfaction may develop in people whose aesthetic results do not match expectations.
- Need for Revision Surgery
Approximately 10-15% of rhinoplasty surgeries may require revision surgery.
- Mechanical problems: Unwanted collapses or protrusions may occur in the nasal structure.
- Aesthetic results that do not meet expectations: When there is a difference between the patient’s imagined result and the result of the surgery, re-surgery may be required.
Rhinoplasty surgery is a serious procedure that requires care. Knowing these risks helps patients to enter the surgery with the right expectations. In the hands of experienced and expert surgeons such as Seçkin Ulusoy, these risks are minimised and the likelihood of successful results increases.
Choosing the Right Rhinoplasty Surgeon: Factors to Consider
Rhinoplasty surgeries are cosmetic surgeries that require 3-dimensional and intensive surgical experience. Rhinoplasty surgeries should also aim to increase nasal breathing function. In this respect, we recommend finding an experienced surgeon with a certificate to achieve a satisfactory result after surgery. Doing detailed web research beforehand and evaluating the surgeon’s results on people similar to your nose can be the most essential guide for you. Also, in the decision-making phase about the doctor, I recommend that you carefully read and evaluate the comments received from his past patients. When you combine all these, you can request an online interview with the surgeon you intend to choose in the next stage. At this time, you should discuss your surgical expectations and whether they are achievable in detail. It is best to decide by evaluating all these in detail.
There are many successful rhinoplasty specialists in Istanbul and Turkey. One of the main reasons is that Turkey is a paradise for tourism, the highly professional and detailed work of hospitals and teams in health tourism, and the resulting surgical experience. In this respect, one of the most prominent rhinoplasty surgeons in Istanbul is Professor Doctor Seçkin Ulusoy, who has been dealing with rhinoplasty operations for more than 20 years.
Rhinoplasty Costs: Understanding the Financial Aspects
Mostly Insurance companies does not cover rhinoplasty when it is purely cosmetic operation but can help if structural corrections are required to alleviate medical deformity. Some Insurance companies may cover surgeries that help improve nasal function (septoplasty, nasal valve repair, turbine reduction, etc.).
The scope of the insurance coverage varies according to the details of the health policy. In this respect, if you wish, we can give you a provision (pre-approval) document to request a refund from your insurance company, but remember that companies usually do not pay, and we cannot provide a payment guarantee.

Rhinoplasty Aftercare: Recovery, Healing, and Post-Operative Care
Depending on the condition of the thick skin, it may be necessary to give additional treatments before or after the surgery by consulting the Dermatology doctors. In cases with patients having thick skin, conducting liver and other blood tests allows for the implementation of Vitamin A treatment. This approach is often used and can be quite successful in refining the skin texture.
The amount of cartilage tissues left behind in men and women during aesthetic nose surgery varies. Post-operative bruising and swelling are more common in men, and the final state of the nose occurs more longer.
Recovery Process After Rhinoplasty:
Cosmetic nose surgeries are mostly performed under general anaesthesia, but local anaesthesia may be preferred for minor changes. Cosmetic rhinoplasty surgery takes an average of 3 hours and depending on the patient’s condition, the patient may be hospitalised for one night as a precautionary measure to make the first night more comfortable and safe. Some patients may be discharged after 4-6 hours after surgery upon their special request.
· How is the first day after rhinoplasty?
Generally, it is sufficient to stay in your room in the hospital for the first day and night after rhinoplasty. Since you are under general anaesthesia, it will be better for your safety if you are followed by hospital staff overnight. In the meantime, you will be given antibiotics, antipyretic and anti-edema drugs intravenously. In addition, ice is applied under your eyes for 15 minutes every hour.
You will be discharged the next day after the operation if you are deemed suitable after observation by the surgeon. Before discharge, you will be informed about the care and cleaning of the operation area. You will be prescribed the medication you need to use and you will be informed in detail about the points you should pay attention to.
After the operation, you can usually drink water after 1 hour and eat after 2 hours. You should definitely call the ward nurse when you first stand up. Because you may feel slightly dizzy after general anaesthesia. If you feel comfortable, you can walk around the hospital freely, provided that your nurse is with you.
· Is a tampon placed in the nose?
Cloth tampon application after nose surgery has been almost completely abandoned especially in our country. Thin plastic silicone applications into the nose to accelerate postoperative healing and reduce bleeding have now completely replaced the cloth tampon. Silicone tampons are thin and allow nasal breathing (Doyle splint) and are removed on the 3rd-6th day of surgery.
In addition, the application of plaster to shape the nose has been largely replaced by medical products called splints. These splints can be made of materials that soften in hot water and harden when cooled (thermal splint) or aluminium. The splint is removed 5-6 days after the operation and a bandage is applied afterwards. When you remove the bandages yourself in the shower after one week, no additional shaping is required. After the bandages are removed, you can start the massage applications recommended to you.
· What is the general process after the operation?
After rhinoplasty surgery, the patient is generally hospitalised in the hospital for observation overnight, depending on his/her health condition. The patient is allowed to walk within 1-3 hours after the operation.
If no health problems such as nausea and dizziness are observed after 1-3 hours, the patient can drink water and eat.
Depending on the general health status of the patient, the patient is discharged on the same day and in some cases the next day. During the recovery period, the patient is checked in the clinic on days 2-6. In the second control (6th day), nasal plasters and splints are removed. After that, it is possible to follow up online.
· Does Edema, Bruising and Swelling Occur?
Aesthetic nose surgery is a surgery with low risk and complications. Patients can return to normal business life (those working in office or jobs that do not require physical strain) at the end of the 5-7th day, which is the recovery period, by undergoing a largely comfortable process. Mild swelling and bruising seen during and after this period are considered quite normal and resolve spontaneously in a short time. Since there is aesthetic appearance concern during this period, it is not a problem to apply concealer make-up after 2-5 days.
· Is there pain after nose surgery?
Rhinoplasty surgeries are largely painless operations. After the surgery, the risk of pain is minimised by giving the patient painkillers recommended by the specialist physician. As a result of regular use of the drugs and regular compliance with the instructions given, postoperative pain and other negativities such as bruising and swelling will disappear as soon as possible.
· What are the tips that can help the nose surgery recovery process?
– Sleep on high pillows for 6 weeks after the operation, helping to reduce swelling.
– Try to sleep on your side, we recommend the use of travel pillows when travelling.
– Follow a low-salt diet that helps reduce swelling at the tip of the nose.
– Apply a cold compress with ice cubes for the first 48 hours.
– Try not to blow your nose for 2 weeks after the operation.
– Avoid strenuous activities for the first two weeks and heavy sports for four weeks.
Is An Intra Nose Pad Used In Nose Aesthetics?
The patient can be observed stay in the hospital, mostly clinics in Turkey, for a precautionary night after the operation, and this situation is entirely related to the patient’s health status.
Thin silicones which have breating holes ( Doyle nasel splint) are placed in the nose against the risk of bleeding during the operation and pads placed 3-6 days after the end of the operation are removed.
There is a cast (Thermal nose ridge splint) placed on the back of the nose ( Nose ridge ) at the end of the operation. This cast is removed 5-6 days after the operation, and massage applications are started quickly.
When Is a Nose Aesthetic Patient Discharged?
After rhinoplasty surgery, the patient is generally hosted in the hospital to stay under observation for one night, based on their general health and comfort status.
If a nausea health problem is not observed at the end of 1-3 hours, the patient can start drinking water and eating.
In some cases, the patient demands to be discharged home on the same day, but our suggestion is a night stay in the hospital, and the specialist doctor should come to the controls during the recovery period.
Does Nose Aesthetic Patient Have Much Pain? Will There Be Any Bruising or Swelling?
The patient, who has had a comfortable process without complications in the operation, can return to work life at the end of 5-7 days, which is the recovery period. But in regards to less swelling technologies, he or she can come back to the daily routine even on discharge day.
During and after this period, mild swelling and bruising are considered quite normal and disappear spontaneously in a short time. After 4-5 days, the person’s appearance can be covered with make-up and these swellings gradually decrease next couple of days. After the surgery two week later a lot of people do not realize the patient had rhinoplasty surgery, but microwelling reduces time and ultimately results goes a couple of months more.
General anesthesia of the patient during the operation ensures that there is no pain. Afterward, it will be sufficient to take precautions against the possibility of pain by giving the painkillers recommended by the specialist physician to the person.

How long does it take nose job healing time?
You can see below rhinoplasty recovery period:
- First Postoperative Days: Edema and mild bruises under the eyes are frequently seen. These symptoms rapidly decrease and disappear within a few days.
- After Two Weeks: Approximately two weeks after surgery, most of the edema and bruising will have disappeared, and most people will not notice that you have had surgery.
Microedema Reduction and Final Recovery: Micro-edema reduction and the final healing process continue for several months. This process takes an average of six months for first-time patients and eight months for revision (second surgery) patients.
· How is the healing process of rhinoplasty surgery?
Patients undergoing rhinoplasty surgery for the first time can perform their normal daily activities the day after the operation. Edema and bruises on the face disappear within 10-14 days. However, complete healing and complete disappearance of micro-edema may continue until 4-6 months. After revision rhinoplasty, the process of edema reduction is slower. Full recovery occurs after an average of 8-12 months.
· Does the insurance cover rhinoplasty?
Normally, rhinoplasty surgeries are not covered by SSI and private insurances since they are performed for cosmetic purposes. However, only in case of an accident, emergency surgeries that develop nasal fractures or clots in the nose are covered. In addition, some private health insurances may cover cases such as nasal flesh growth that prevents breathing.
· How should male nose aesthetics be?
In men, the tip of the nose is less raised and the flat back of the nose is considered a more masculine appearance. In addition, the tip of the nose is preferred to be sharper and more refined in male rhinoplasty. A round and raised nose tip is considered a more feminine appearance. However, only one criterion is not valid in determining all of these, and the body-face ratios of the person are important.
· Why is the price of nose surgery high?
Rhinoplasty surgeries require a long analysis and planning before and a serious follow-up afterwards. Rhinoplasty surgery is a cosmetic procedure that takes an average of 3.5 hours and requires 1 night hospitalisation. Anaesthesiologist is also very important for the success of the surgery. In addition, the use of techniques such as ultrasonic piezo and endoscopy are among the factors that increase the price of surgery.
· Is swelling normal after the plaster or splint used in rhinoplasty surgery is removed?
The plaster or splint is removed 6-7 days after rhinoplasty surgery. After the first splint and plaster, there is a very swollen and oedematous appearance, and the swelling is greatly reduced in a few weeks with massage applications. At the end of the 2nd week of the operation, the symptoms of the operation disappear. However, it may take up to 6 months for the oedema in the tissues to completely disappear and find its final shape.
· Does nasal middle bone curvature cause shortness of breath?
The air flow through the nose is especially through the upper part of the middle nose and this is also called the internal valve area. The middle bone curvature of the nose is most commonly caused by nasal fractures. This causes difficulty in breathing as well as aesthetically curved nose appearance. In order to correct problems related to the anatomical structure of the nose, septorhinoplasty surgery, also defined as functional rhinoplasty, is the most suitable option.
· How is septum deviation surgery performed?
The cartilage called septum separates both nasal cavities in the middle. This cartilage extends deeper from the nasal entrance and joins with the bones at the back. This region in the middle part of the nose that separates both nasal cavities from each other is called “Septum”. The anatomical region is formed by cartilage in the front and bone tissues in the back. Curvatures in this region often continue in both the cartilage in front and the bone tissue in the back and cause curvature in the shape of the nose. The curvature of the septum causes nasal congestion and the process of correcting this is called “Septoplasty” surgery. If an aesthetic procedure is to be performed in the shape of the nose together with the septum, it is called “Septorhinoplasty” or “Functional rhinoplasty”.
· How to remove the bridge of the nose?
In rhinoplasty surgeries, the nasal arch is usually removed by filing or cutting. For this, one of the open or closed surgery methods is preferred. These surgeries are performed with ultrasonic methods or bone cutters. In addition, endoscopes are frequently used today, especially in closed nose surgeries. Especially with the preservation rhinoplasty (Preservation = Let- Down / Push Down / Ishida) methods, which have been very popular in the last 10 years, the nose can be compressed downwards by removing the cartilage and bones under the nose without removing the back of the nose.
· Is nasal bone fracture performed in rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty surgery is a reconstruction surgery to correct deformity. Therefore, a curved bone must be cut or broken to give it the correct shape. This process is performed with bone cutters and a hammer or with electric cutters called ultrasonic rhinoplasty methods, which is a more up-to-date method.
· Is nose aesthetics done at 16 years old?
Rhinoplasty surgeries can be performed after the age of 16 for girls and 17 for boys. It is not recommended at earlier ages because cartilage and facial development has not yet been completed. However, in rare cases that cause shortness of breath in the child, childhood nose surgery can be performed as an exception and out of necessity.
· What should not be done after nose surgery?
It is not recommended to blow your nose, sneeze, lie on your side for 6 weeks after rhinoplasty surgery, to be exposed to the sun after 4-6 weeks, to wear glasses before 4-6 months, to sleep face down before 8-12 months.
· How does the process work after rhinoplasty surgery?
1) First Week: What to Expect?
- Oedema and Bruises: Edema and bruises are most intense in the first 48 hours. Swelling around the eyes is common and there may be slight colour changes in the nose and cheeks. However, these swellings and bruises begin to decrease within 5-7 days.
- Pain and Discomfort: Most of the patients do not feel serious pain after surgery, but a feeling of pressure and congestion in the nose may be experienced. This discomfort can be controlled with painkillers recommended by the doctor.
- Nasal Splint and Tampons: Splint (nasal splint) and tampons used to protect the nose after surgery are usually removed within 5-7 days. At this stage, slight bleeding and leaks from the nose are also normal.
- Things to do in the first days: Applying cold compresses, keeping the head elevated and following the care instructions recommended by the doctor will help reduce swelling. Physical activities and blows to the nose should be avoided.
2) Between 1-3 Months: Which Changes Are Seen?
- Reduction of Swelling: By the end of the first month, the general contours of the nose begin to become clear, but it may take up to 3 months for the subtle oedema to completely disappear. It may take a little longer for the swelling at the tip of the nose to go down.
- Improvement of Breathing: If the intranasal structures (septum) are also corrected during surgery, breathing functions improve significantly during this process. However, full functional recovery may take several months.
- Harmony of Nasal Tissues: Nasal tissues restructure themselves after surgery. During this period, while the shape of the nose gradually settles, its harmony with the patient’s facial structure also improves. A slight feeling of numbness may still persist and this is normal.
- Exercise and Daily Life: After 6-8 weeks it is possible to start light exercises, but activities with a high risk of impact should still be avoided.
3) After 1 Year: How to recognise full recovery?
- Settling of the Final Shape: It takes approximately 12 months for the nose to take its final shape. This period is especially important for small changes in sensitive areas such as the tip of the nose. For example, it may take up to a year for the oedema at the tip of the nose to completely disappear.
- Changes due to skin thickness: In patients with thick skin, this process may take longer because it takes time for the oedema to subside. In patients with thin skin, the final form of the nose can be noticed earlier.
- Is Revision Necessary? As with any surgery, there may be a possibility of revision in rhinoplasty, but it is expected that the shape and functions will stabilise within 1 year. If revision will be necessary, doctors usually recommend waiting for the completion of 1 year.
- Psychological and Aesthetic Results: During this period, the patient gets used to the new nose shape and begins to fully experience the aesthetic and psychological benefits of the surgery. Patient satisfaction is usually achieved at the highest level during this period.
· What are practical tips for reducing postoperative oedema and bruising?
1) Use of Cold Compress
- Applying a cold compress to the eye area in the first 48 hours after surgery can significantly reduce oedema and bruising.
- Cautions: The compress should be applied on the cheeks and around the eyes, not directly on the nose. Applying compress for 20 minutes and taking a break for 10 minutes is an ideal approach.
2) Keeping the Head High
- Keeping the head elevated while lying down (supporting it with two pillows or using a bed at a 45-degree angle) allows the oedema to decrease faster. Thanks to gravity, blood circulation is regulated and it is easier for the swelling to go down.
- Continuity: It is useful to maintain this position for the first 1-2 weeks.
3) Reducing Salt Consumption
- Avoiding salty foods helps reduce oedema. Excessive salt consumption can lead to fluid retention in the body, delaying the reduction of swelling.
- Recommendation: Drinking plenty of water and following a low-sodium diet promotes healing.
4) Avoiding Heavy Exercises
- It is important to avoid intense physical activity for the first 4-6 weeks. Exercise can increase blood pressure, trigger oedema and lead to permanent bruising.
- Alternative: Taking light walks improves blood circulation and does not harm the healing process.
5) Using Edema Reducing Support Products
- Some doctors may recommend homeopathic products that help reduce oedema and bruising, for example arnica cream or bromelain supplements. However, a doctor should always be consulted before using these products.
6) Avoiding Smoking and Alcohol Use
- Smoking slows the healing process and delays the reduction of oedema. Alcohol can cause dehydration and increase swelling.
- Recommendation: Avoiding smoking and alcohol before and after the operation accelerates the healing process.
7) Following Doctor’s Recommendations
- Regular use of nasal spray or other medicines prescribed by the doctor prevents nasal congestion and supports the healing process. It is also important to attend doctor’s check-up appointments regularly in order to follow the development.
· What are the Most Common Complications in Rhinoplasty Surgery?
- Bleeding (Epistaxis): Mild bleeding can be seen in the first few days after surgery. Rarely, more intense bleeding may occur and medical intervention may be required.
- Infection As with any surgical intervention, there is a risk of infection after rhinoplasty. However, with modern surgical techniques and the use of antibiotics, this risk has been considerably reduced.
- Anaesthesia Related Complications: Although rare, allergic reactions or respiratory problems may occur during general anaesthesia.
- Septal Perforation: Perforation of the septum (wall) in the nose is a rare complication. This can lead to nasal congestion and bleeding.
- Need for Revision: If aesthetic or functional problems occur after the first surgery, a second intervention may be required. 5-15% of patients may need revision surgery.
· What precautions can be taken to reduce the risk of complications after rhinoplasty surgery?
- Preoperative Assessment: Health history and allergy status should be reviewed in detail. A good evaluation contributes to the prevention of anaesthetic complications.
- Surgeon Selection: Choosing an expert and experienced surgeon significantly reduces the risk of complications. Especially a surgeon who has a good command of nasal anatomy offers more successful results.
- Avoiding Smoking and Alcohol Use: Smoking increases the risk of infection by slowing the healing process. Alcohol and smoking should be avoided before and after surgery.
- Medication Use: Blood thinners such as aspirin should be avoided before surgery. Antibiotics and nasal sprays prescribed by the doctor should be used regularly.
- Following Doctor’s Recommendations: Following postoperative care instructions reduces the risk of infection and bleeding. Avoiding physical activities also prevents damage to the nose.
· What are Postoperative Aesthetic Concerns and How to Eliminate Them?
1) What to Do If Postoperative Nose Shape Does Not Meet Expectations?
- Causes: After rhinoplasty surgery, patients may experience concerns that the shape of the nose does not fully meet their expectations. The main reasons for this include unrealistic expectations, inability to see the final shape of the nose due to oedema during the healing process or minor aesthetic errors in surgical intervention.
- Solution: It should be noted that the healing process usually takes 6 months to 1 year to complete. Patients should wait patiently for this period and evaluate the final shape of the nose by staying in regular contact with the doctor. If dissatisfaction persists, revision rhinoplasty options may be considered. However, before deciding on such additional surgeries, the nose should be expected to be fully healed and settled.
2) How to Manage Postoperative Asymmetry or Compliance Problems?
- Causes: After rhinoplasty, asymmetry in the nose wings or harmony with the face may be noticed. Asymmetry may be caused by postoperative oedema or tissue changes during the healing process. In addition, some patients may not like their nose from certain angles of the face in photographs, which may cause aesthetic anxiety.
- Solution: It should be kept in mind that oedema may fluctuate in the first months. The doctor will evaluate any asymmetry or aesthetic problems during this process. Minor deformities can be corrected with postoperative filling procedures. In case of larger problems, second minor touches or revision surgeries recommended by the surgeon may be considered. Patients should communicate openly with their doctors for the best result and clearly express their pre-operative expectations.
· Does my sense of smell change after surgery?
- Changes in the sense of smell: After rhinoplasty surgery, some patients have reported temporary changes in their sense of smell. The process of tissue healing in the nose can affect the perception of odour. Postoperative nasal congestion, oedema and swelling may restrict access to olfactory cells, resulting in a reduced sense of smell.
- Transience: This condition usually resolves within a few weeks after surgery. The sense of smell returns to its former level with the normalisation of the nasal passages and mucosa. However, in some rare cases, permanent loss of smell may occur. Therefore, it is important to discuss this with the surgeon before surgery.
- Conclusion: Most patients report that their sense of smell returns to normal after their nose has fully healed. However, if the sense of smell does not improve, it may be necessary to see a doctor.
· How is the Quality of Life of Patients Who Have Nose Aesthetics Affected?
- Higher Self-Esteem: Rhinoplasty can increase self-esteem in many patients because it improves facial aesthetics. Since the shape of the nose plays an important role in the overall appearance of the face, aesthetic satisfaction after surgery makes individuals feel better about themselves.
- Functional Improvement: Surgery is not only aesthetic, but can also open the airways, making breathing easier. When problems such as nasal obstruction or deviated septum are resolved, patients experience a marked improvement in their overall quality of life. Better breathing can improve sleep quality and provide more energy in daily activities.
- Psychological Effects: Reduced aesthetic concerns can help individuals to be more comfortable in social environments. After rhinoplasty, many patients state that they are more confident in social interactions. However, some patients may have concerns about the results, which may increase the level of anxiety.
- Social and Emotional Effects: After surgery, especially in the age of social media, the importance given to appearance and the opinions of others may put pressure on some patients. Therefore, it is also important to receive psychological support after surgery.
- Conclusion: In general, the quality of life of patients undergoing rhinoplasty is positively affected by aesthetic and functional improvements. However, each individual’s experience may be different and it is important to create a supportive environment in this process.
